Hello...

My name is Dr Abigail Goss.
I am a Chartered Counselling Psychologist and a Registered Practitioner Psychologist with the HCPC.
I offer in person and online psychological therapy for a range of mental and physical health conditions. This can be short term or longer term therapy depending on what you would like to work on.
Sometimes diagnoses are helpful and sometimes they are not, looking beyond the particular label to the personal story, journey and experience is important to me. Helping you to find what is useful and improves your engagement with the life you want to live is what I see as the purpose of psychological therapy.

Therapy with me...

I believe in working collaboratively with clients to find what psychological approach works best for them. Assessment and formulation are key to getting a good understanding of your difficulties and working out with you what changes you would like to make. This means that when we first meet I will be curious about you and your life, asking you lots of different questions, so that I can formulate what is happening and why.
I tend to work integratively using the most appropriate parts of different therapeutic models and approaches which fit for you. I am trained in various therapies including person-centred counselling, cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), mindfulness techniques and working with the mind-body connection.

Experience

My experience covers a range of different services both within the NHS and Charity Sector. I currently work in the NHS as Lead Psychologist for an award winning Pain Management Service but also have experience working in Community Mental Health Teams working with severe and enduring mental health, Drug and Alcohol Services and in the field of Intellectual Disabilities. I also have a lot of experience working therapeutically with individuals who identify as being on the Autistic Spectrum or who are adjusting following a diagnosis.

Areas of Expertise

The main models that I use in therapy are trans-diagnostic which means that they are helpful for many different difficulties and diagnoses. Alongside this though, I do have particular expertise in 3 specific areas of pain, intellectual disabilities and Autism.
If you are experiencing persistent pain then I offer Pain Management which through understanding of pain, your body and your mind can lead to a different relationship with your body and pain. Then you can feel more confident managing your pain and in some circumstances turn down the sensitivity of that system to a point where persistent pain no longer overshadows your life.
Having worked with adults with intellectual disabilities for 8 years I had the honour to work with them and their families through various transitions and challenges.
Understanding Autism/ASD through experience and my Masters means that I have expertise in ensuring therapy is accessible and useful.

If you need a specialist, I am able to offer therapy to people who are affected by Neurodivergence, Learning Disability
